Jeep’s J8 may look like a variant your redneck uncle put together on weekends out of an old Wrangler, but it’s actually a military grade Jeep, constructed in Ohio, capable of last three times as long as the regular (civilian) model. American Expedition Vehicles saw interest in the non-military market and designed a model for those not stuck in a desert warzone halfway across the globe.

The AEV J8 Travels By Land:

AEV’s Jeep J8 is equipped with a VM Motori 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel. It’s great for tackling steep mountain peaks along with the hardest terrain on Earth…it does pretty good in mud and sand pits too. The J8 is totally in its element messing around in the dirty, climbing large rocks like a kid without fear.

…By Sea:

You don’t have to worry about drowning in the J8, as it’s powerful engine can handle water holes up to its windshield. There’s also no fear about messing up your radio, ruining your carpet, or doing harm to the cushy seat padding – the J8 has none of these things. It is bare bones, functional, and really fun to drive!

Even in the Air!

Take the Jeep J8 up a steep cliff and jump off, this puppy can almost fly! “It’s like a billy goat with an attitude.” says Jalopnik, we couldn’t agree more. It is difficult justifying the $50,000 price tag, maybe you should keep this purchase a secret from your wife.

The Jeep name of today is seen more as a commuting vehicle and not always synonymous with off-roading or a tough exterior. But when the original Jeeps rolled off carrier ships and onto European soil during World War II, they were bare bones yet solid utility vehicles ready to be taken into battle. They transported troops, generals and medical units across an entire continent. The name Jeep has come a long way since, but will always be remembered at a reliable, mobile machine.

The Bantam BRC was the first model to be produced by the United States Army as a light weight transport for overseas officials and medics. It was dubbed a “General Purpose” device, which is one of the many theories as to there the “Jeep” name (think “GP”) originated. Another story talks about a character from the classic cartoon “Popeye” – Eugene the Jeep, who could “go anywhere” much like the vehicles. There are also theories using military slang. During WWI “jeep” was another term used for new recruits, and “jeep” is also (apparently) another term for “small device.” The 1941 production model (Jeep’s first non-prototype) was christened the “Ford GP.” Yes, Ford produced some of the original Jeeps. Another nickname for the truck was “Pygmy” – good thing that one didn’t stick.

Regardless of where the name originated, decades of battle and proven field experience make this vehicle no new recruit, but a seasoned veteran of military action. The first vehicles were bare bones, with only your speedometer, gear shifters and brake/gas/clutch pedals. 600,000 jeeps were produced during WWII at a cost of only $300/per unit. Functionality was king, and The Museum of Modern Art describes the Jeep as “a masterpiece of functionalist design.”

The Jeep “quad” (also another name for the vehicle) was constructed for extreme off-road capabilities, as it had to climb rocky hills and rumble-filled streets thanks to the destruction of buildings by bombing runs. One of the first Jeeps was shown off at the US Capital building, where then Senator Meade of New York and New Jersey Rep Thomas drove one up it’s steps. Since that day, Jeep has worked it’s way up shores on both sides of Europa and into the history books as one of America’s finest fighting machines.

The improved on- and off-road handling of the five-passenger Jeep has more extensive features that will give consumers a second thought about turning the Liberty down.

The option of two- or four-wheel drive is available for the two trim levels: Sport and Limited. The Sport Model has 16-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, air-conditioning and a CD stereo. The Liberty Limited Edition upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels, a power driver seat, cruise control, a leather steering wheel and the Infinity sound system along with satellite radio. Optional features for each trim level include 18-inch chrome wheels, automatic temperature control, heated leather seats, the Sky Slider cloth roof or traditional sunroof, Bluetooth and a MyGIG infotainment system. Each model is powered by a 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine.

The Grand Cherokee earned its first major renovation since the 2005 model year with upgrades that include more horsepower and a more convenient interior design. Currently one of the few SUVs with a diesel engine, the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee far from lacks with its advanced off-road capabilities.

For all five-engines, the Grand Cherokee comes in four different trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland and SRT8. The SRT8 is only all-wheel drive; while the others are available in either two- or four-wheel drive.

The Laredo has 17-inch wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a trip computer and a CD stereo. The Limited additionally includes a sunroof, leather interior, remote vehicle start, a back-up camera, dual-zone automatic climate control and a stereo with Boston Acoustics. Upgrading to 18-inch chrome wheels, the Overland has HID headlights, real wood trim, Bluetooth and the MyGIG hard-drive-based audio/navigation system. Twenty-inch wheels run the SRT8, as well as, larger breaks, styling enhancements and leather/suede for the sport front seats.

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee rides considerably well on-the-road, and even better off. The tuned suspension and receptive steering allows for better handling around turns. Overall, the Grand Cherokee much improved with the additional features and comfort for a more enjoyable ride.

Unlike other Jeeps, this car-based crossover handles well like a car in terms of riding and handling. The 2008 Jeep Compass has a handful of new additions, but competes with other crossovers such as the Honda Element and Nissan Rogue.

The Compass comes in two trim levels: Compass Sport and Compass Limited; either available in either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The Sport has 17-inch wheels, CD/MP3 stereo and air-conditioning. The Limited upgrades to 18-inch wheels, leather interior, heated front seats, satellite and a 115-volt outlet. Although standard for the Limited, optional features for the Sport include power windows and mirrors, cruise control and keyless entry. Each Jeep Compass runs through a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The Compass Sport only runs by a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Each Jeep Compass will comfortably seat five, with plenty of headroom for tall drivers. Cargo space is limited, but allows more room with the rear seats flattened. The floor of the trunk is removable for an easier-to-clean capability.

The Compass comes with the most common safety features, such as the antilock brake system and stability control. Front seat airbags are optional.

The first Jeep product to provide third-row seating, the Jeep Commander has come a long way through upgrading its comfort and entertainment for users. This year Jeep’s Commander SUV is more family-friendly, even when off-roading.

In its third model year, the Commander offers three trim levels: Sport, Limited and Overland. The entry-level Sport can be accommodated for either five or six people, and comes with 17-inch wheels, full power accessories, rear park assist, air-conditioning, heated side mirrors and a CD player. The Commander Limited additionally has a rear back-up camera, power-adjustable pedals, heated front seats, leather interior and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Overland trim upgrades to 18-inch wheels, wood interior trim, Bluetooth and the MyGig navigation and music system. MyGig’s internal hard drive is able to store up to 1,600 songs. Each trim level can optionally include a power liftgate, backseat TV and a navigation system.
