As the creators of compact sport-utilities, only last year Jeep created the Compass for consumers looking for smaller SUVs. Unlike other Jeeps, this car-based crossover handles well like a car in terms of riding and handling. The 2008 Jeep Compass has a handful of new additions, but competes with other crossovers such as the Honda Element and Nissan Rogue.

The Compass comes in two trim levels: Compass Sport and Compass Limited; either available in either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The Sport has 17-inch wheels, CD/MP3 stereo and air-conditioning. The Limited upgrades to 18-inch wheels, leather interior, heated front seats, satellite and a 115-volt outlet. Although standard for the Limited, optional features for the Sport include power windows and mirrors, cruise control and keyless entry. Each Jeep Compass runs through a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The Compass Sport only runs by a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Each Jeep Compass will comfortably seat five, with plenty of headroom for tall drivers. Cargo space is limited, but allows more room with the rear seats flattened. The floor of the trunk is removable for an easier-to-clean capability.

The Compass comes with the most common safety features, such as the antilock brake system and stability control. Front seat airbags are optional.
